about which substances dissolve in water and which do not.

Some exceptions are given below.
You do not need to know about other exceptions for GCSE.

Soluble Exceptions
Sodium, Potassium and Ammonium salts.  
Ethanoates  
Nitrates  
Chlorides Silver and Lead
Sulfates Barium, Calcium and Lead
   
Insoluble  
Carbonates and Hydroxides Sodium, Potassium and Ammonium
