Ethanol - Dehydration.

Ethanol can be dehydrated to make ethene.
This reaction is the reverse of the hydration of ethene.

Ethanol gas (vapour) is passed over a hot aluminium oxide catalyst.

ethanol     arrow       ethene   +    water
C2H5OH(l)  arrow      C2H4(g)   +   H2O(l)

 

Ethene can also be made by cracking hydrocarbons.
