What is a Telescope?
A telescope is used to collect electromagnetic
waves
from distant objects.
The first
telescopes collected visible
light
waves from distant
objects
and allowed people to see much more detail
than they could observe just by looking with their eyes.
People used telescopes to look at many objects on Earth
and
some people used telescopes to look at the stars
and planets.
Today there are many telescopes which people use
to gather information about the Universe.
Different telescopes collect electromagnetic
waves
across the
whole of the electromagnetic
spectrum, not just light
waves.
