What are the General Tests for Ammonia Gas?

1)  Ammonia gas, NH3(g) has no colour.

2)  Ammonia gas has a characteristic pungent smell.

3)  Ammonia gas will turn moist litmus paper from red to blue,
and moist universal indicator paper to blue.
It is alkaline in waterpH = 11·5.

4)  Ammonia gas will put out a lit splint.


What is the Specific Test for
Ammonia Gas?

Ammonia will form a white smoke
in the presence of hydrogen chloride gas, HCl(g).
The white smoke is ammonium chloride, NH4Cl(s).

 

How is Ammonia Gas Collected?

Ammonia gas is less dense than air and can be 
collected by upward delivery or by using a gas syringe.
