Testing for Gases

The Test for an Alkane Gas.

1)  An alkane gas has no colour.

2)  An alkane gas may have a smell.

3)  An alkane gas has no effect on moist litmus paper
or moist
universal indicator paper - it is neutral.

4)  An alkane gas will burn with a blue or yellow flame.

 

Specific Test.

There is no specific test for an alkane gas.
The burnt gas products are carbon dioxide and water
(see Test for Gases).
