Test for an Alkene Gas.
An Alkene Gas
1) Has no colour.
2) May have a smell.
3) Has no effect on moist litmus
paper
or moist universal indicator paper -
it is neutral.
4) Will burn with a blue or yellow flame.
Specific test.
There is no
specific test.
The burnt gas
products are carbon dioxide and
water - see Test for
Gases.
An alkene may be distinguished from an alkane
by shaking the gas with bromine water.
Bromine water is brown, and
will lose its colour with an alkene
but not with an alkane.
Bromine adds across the
double bond of
an alkene
to form a colourless dibromo
alkane.
