Testing for Gases

Test for Carbon Monoxide Gas,  CO(g).

1)  Carbon monoxide gas has no colour or smell.

2)  Carbon monoxide gas has no effect on moist litmus paper
or moist
universal indicator paper - it is neutral.

3)  Carbon monoxide gas burns with a blue flame
(this should not be confused with the yellow flame
produced during incomplete combustion of methane).

Specific test.

There is no specific test for carbon monoxide gas.
The burnt gas (see above) is carbon dioxide.

Note - carbon monoxide is very poisonous.
