Water - Solubility - Ions

Water - General Information.

Water is essential for all life. Nothing can live without water.

On the surface of the Earth there is more water
than any other substance. Water moves
between the surface of the Earth and the atmosphere
(see the Water Cycle).

Water has many uses.
It is treated on a large scale to make it safe to drink.
Water is used both as a solvent and as a coolant.

Water is an important raw material for many industrial processes
including the manufacture of ammonia and sulfuric acid.

Many substances dissolve in water. Some of these substances
make water hard. Some substances
react with water to produce acidic or alkaline solutions.

The sea contains a very large number of dissolved substances.
